Like so many of you, I was so so so excited to see Mo’Nique pick up the Academy Award for best supporting actress in Precious Based on the novel Push by Sapphire. Her gritty portrayal of Mary Jones left me heart-wrenched and wanting to look away, yet sympathetic because of just how messed up and unlovable this woman really had become. Although I think it is shameful that only a handful of African American actresses (exactly 4 for supporting roles- Hattie McDaniel, Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, and now Mo’Nique, and only one for a lead role- Halle Berry) have had their work acknowledged by the Academy, I think women of all ethnic backgrounds are proud of this win. I especially appreciate Mo’Nique’s comment in her acceptance speech “that it can be about the performance and not about the politics.” In her acceptance speech she was elegant, she was eloquent, she was passionate, and she was dynamic!
Here is where you can see video (courtesy of CNN) of Mo’Nique sharing backstage about what we really can say is her historic win because none of us will ever forget it. In case you were one of the two people on the planet who missed her speech, you can see it here (courtesy of the Academy).
